Abstract

Purpose: To determine the role of digital photoplethysmography (D-PPG) (VASOQUANT VQ-1000) in the management of varicose vein, in comparison to the ¡¯gold standard¡¯ of color duplex scan.
Method: We have tested refilling time (RT) and ejection volume (VO) with D-PPG in 30 patients (45 limbs) of varicose vein pre and postoperatively. We also did duplex scan in every patients for definite diagnosis.
Result: In all patients saphenous reflux was detected in duplex scan. The diagnostic sensitivity was 62% with RT (<21 seconds) and 31% with Vo (<3.0%). After curative surgery 86.6% (30/45) limbs showed improvement with RT and 73.3% (33/45) limbs improved with Vo.
Conclusion: RT is more valuable than Vo in our experience for follow up the results of varicose vein surgery. Automatized D-PPG is simple and easy to perform.
